Motifs & Development

week four   In this session we started off by explaining our stimulus to the other groups, presenting our ideas and showing what we want to achieve with our piece. It was really interesting to hear the other groups’ thought processes and concepts and I’m looking forward to seeing how everything will be developed into a piece.   After our discussion, within our groups, we were divided into pairs and had to come up with a motif that can be repeated or developed in our dance. Using methods from the first week, we chose words associated with our stimulus to help aid the creative process and inspire movement. Megan and Abi’s word was “connected”, Devanshi and Mhairi’s word was ”uncertain” and mine and Daisy’s word was “influence”.   Daisy and I really wanted to create movement that would be easy to develop and place throughout the dance but would also clearly convey our stimulus. We started out by playing around with short movements like stepping forward/ looking over our shou...

Stimulus

Image
From a group of pictures we were particularly drawn to this one as   there is so much to interpret and infer. From this picture alone, we managed to brainstorm many ideas and were able to think of our stimulus Group   > multiple people > group/social settings > all connected ?  Science related- lots of pre-existing research and articles-   easier to formulate and brainstorm ideas Idea 1: Social experiments on conformity   Conformity- an individual’s tendency to follow unspoken rules or behaviours in a social setting Conformity can be influenced by a want to fit in/ peer pressure Asch conformity experiments 1950s: -test subjects asked to choose a line that matched the length of 1 of 3 lines - individually they answered correctly -when asked in a room (with people who were in on the experiment and told to answer incorrectly) 75% of them went along with what everyone else said   Power of conformity! Students said that while they knew the rest of the g...

Translation Task

week three In this session, the task we did was based on the game ‘Chinese whispers’. In our house groups we stood in a line facing away from the mirror so we couldn’t see each other, the person at the front had to come up with 2 counts of 8 of choreography based on a word they were given. After they had composed their movements they then had to turn around to the second person and only had 2 chances to show them the choreography. The second person would then turn around to the third person but only have one chance to see the choreography- the third person only has 1 chance to pick up the choreography. We repeated this 4 times so that everyone in our group had a chance to choreograph and the end result for each motif was quite altered from the initial version.   The words that we used in our group “line, four, falling, gather”. This task meant that we had ended up with 4 original motifs and 4 translated ones, from this we had to piece them all together and structure them in a way t...

Art as a Political Tool

week one/ two In this session we focused and explored the use of art as a form of protest/ how people have presented their political thoughts in an innovative way.   In our household groups, we were initially given 5 different photos (linked below) and asked to write down our thoughts or ideas that were evoked from each image. We had 3 minutes to analyse each picture before we’d rotate groups and change pictures so we ended up with everyone’s thoughts on each image.  This task was really stimulating as it was so interesting to see how others had interpreted the concepts presented in the images. On the occasion that someone had raised a question, there would be a chain of replies or comments which created a discussion- having this visual train of thought was really helpful and thought-provoking in the analysing process.   After this task, each group got given a picture each and we had to pick 3 words from the piece of paper. With these 3 words, we had to come up with...
