Motifs & Development
week four
In this session we started off by explaining our stimulus to the other groups, presenting our ideas and showing what we want to achieve with our piece. It was really interesting to hear the other groups’ thought processes and concepts and I’m looking forward to seeing how everything will be developed into a piece.
After our discussion, within our groups, we were divided into pairs and had to come up with a motif that can be repeated or developed in our dance. Using methods from the first week, we chose words associated with our stimulus to help aid the creative process and inspire movement. Megan and Abi’s word was “connected”, Devanshi and Mhairi’s word was ”uncertain” and mine and Daisy’s word was “influence”.
Daisy and I really wanted to create movement that would be easy to develop and place throughout the dance but would also clearly convey our stimulus. We started out by playing around with short movements like stepping forward/ looking over our shoulder as if to make sure that the people behind were copying what we were doing- I feel as though this really conveyed the word “influence” well. After developing this sequence by using choreographic devices (like canon and gestural movements) we were eventually able to use it in our piece. We also decided that it was a really interesting way to enter the stage as it was so captivating and would grab the audience’s attention right away.
The two other pairs showed us the motif that they came up with and we learned/ started to develop them too however we did not get enough time to finish so we look forward to finishing them off in the future. Here is a video with our original motifs and how we have started to develop them:
This is not the final product but I’m very happy with how we’ve started to utilise different methods to inspire choreography, instead of trying to randomly come up with movement. This will definitely accelerate the creative process in the future as we are more comfortable with using varied techniques for choreographing.
Very detailed blog post caitlin! I really like how you talked about the ideas you and daisy thought of when choreographing! Do you think you will use the motif and development technique again? What did you think of the other motifs created by the rest of your group?
ReplyDeleteThank you! We will use this again as it is an effective way of showing our stimulus as these movements can be repeated throughout the dance. I really liked the other motifs as they were very creative and I look forward to developing them to use in our piece again.
DeleteI really like the words you chose to help create your motifs! It is interesting how you created your motif and I like the idea of peering over your shoulder to show the word “influence”. When using your motif in the choreography, will you keep it the same each time or add changes to it?
ReplyDeleteThank you! We will repeat these motifs again in our piece however we will develop them to be performed differently. These altered versions will still be very similar to the original motif so we can still convey our stimulus but it will be more interesting to watch.
DeleteI appreciate the fact that, as you began to choreograph, you focused on the meaning that is conveyed through the movement and also considered the development of the piece. Can you elaborate on the reason that your entrance would engage the audience?
ReplyDeleteThanks! Firstly, its the first movement in the piece so its naturally going to take the audiences initial interest. Secondly, we are looking at each other- we are dancing in relation to each other and not just performing to each other. This element of narrative is quite intruiging and engaging for an audience as I feel like they are trying to piece together what is happening.
