Translation Task

week three

In this session, the task we did was based on the game ‘Chinese whispers’. In our house groups we stood in a line facing away from the mirror so we couldn’t see each other, the person at the front had to come up with 2 counts of 8 of choreography based on a word they were given. After they had composed their movements they then had to turn around to the second person and only had 2 chances to show them the choreography. The second person would then turn around to the third person but only have one chance to see the choreography- the third person only has 1 chance to pick up the choreography. We repeated this 4 times so that everyone in our group had a chance to choreograph and the end result for each motif was quite altered from the initial version.

The words that we used in our group “line, four, falling, gather”. This task meant that we had ended up with 4 original motifs and 4 translated ones, from this we had to piece them all together and structure them in a way that would work for a group. After creating a short routine from these motifs we then went through it and added in different choreographic devices to make it more interesting- some examples of these are canon, levels and accumulation.

I found this task quite enjoyable as it was really interesting to see how much the sequence changed from the first person to the last person. Again this was a very creative way to come up with choreography as we managed to do 32 seconds so I would definitely want to use this in the future. However in some aspects, this could be seen as a less useful method because it is quite time consuming compared to other ways of generating ideas for choreography.

  1. I really like how you have voiced your own opinion on the task as you mentioned that you found it interesting to see how much the sequence changed as the task developed. When the person behind you was showing their 8 counts of choreography, did you have a small idea into what the word could possibly be with the movements they produced?

    1. Thank you! I did understand that there was a geometric theme as there were lots of straight lines being made in the choreography. Their chosen word ended up being "lines".

  2. Very well structured blog post Caitlin! Its very clear and you really get an idea of what the task was and your feelings towards it. If you were to use this task again what would you have done differently If anything?

    1. Thank you! If I had the opportunity to do this again I would make my choreography a bit more difficult. If the level of difficulty is harder, it is not easy to pick up and would therefore result in a bigger change made to the original choreography. These kind of changes would definitely be more interesting to observe and to use in the final piece.

  3. This is a very well structured blog and I can really understand the task you were set! I like how you added choreographic devices such as cannon and accumulation to make sure the choreography was interesting! Would you use this task when creating your group piece?

    1. Thanks Caitlin! I think I would use this again if I am struggling to think of choreography because the only disadvantage to this method is that it is quite time consuming. There are other methods that work faster but I did really enjoy doing this task.

  4. You have described the task very clearly. Do you feel that these particular words enhanced the quality of movement that you were able to produce?

    1. Thanks Devanshi! Yes, these words definitely gave a starting point that made it easier to inspire good quality movement. I also feel it is partly due to the way we interpret the words as many different people would think of many different things for the word "gather" for example.
