First Draft & Feedback
week 9
This week we were able to complete the last few sections of our piece and we have a finished draft. In the second song of our piece, we really wanted to convey the idea of us breaking away from conformity and starting to showcase our individuality. For some of our sections, we used motifs and gestures from the first half of the piece and we developed them to have a more flowing and free dynamic. Using these movements from previous sections and showing their development made for effective choreography that tied in well with our stimulus. We also introduced a new section called the “waltz” section as we count in 3’s while travelling in a weaving motion in a circle. Referring to one of Crystal Pite’s works that we have drawn inspiration from before, we watched “Solo Echo” again. In this piece, we really liked the look of the extensive arm lines and use of the upper body so we tried to incorporate this aspect into our waltz section. In the ending section, we break away from our group while doing our own individual movements- I feel that this conveys our idea of individuality really well

Each group was able to perform their piece and gain feedback. I was initially a bit nervous to share our work with the class however watching back our video, I am very pleased with how it came out for a first finished draft. I feel as though this performance was very helpful as it highlighted the weaknesses in our piece and it was a good opportunity to have different perspectives from our peers.
-Some feedback we got was to add more dynamics to make it more interesting as it felt like all our steps were on the same energy level.
-We also have to fix timing issues- instead of reaching our desired effect of confusion or feeling pressure to join in, it sometimes just looks messy so it’s very important to be on the exact counts.
-At the end of mine and Mhairi’s duet, we have to sustain the ending rather than just cutting it off abruptly
This was very helpful feedback and we will be using this to improve our piece in rehearsals.
I have enjoyed reading about your choreographic choices that seem to demonstrate the progression of your piece very well. Can you elaborate on the significance of the new section?
ReplyDeleteThank you! The new section is a developed version of our first entrance motif so it shows this sort of character development where we feel like we are able to finally break away from the pressure of conformity.
DeleteGreat blog post Caitlyn! I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts! Have you thought of or received any intrinsic feedback? And if so how will you implement it into your piece?
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, we noticed that a lot of our formations and timings are unclear so we need to practice and refine that. Accuracy and attention to detail are very important in our piece as it needs to be clear to the audience when we are in unison and when we are not. If we are not able to differentiate this then it will just look messy and ineffective.
DeleteThis is a great blog Caitlyn! I really like how in the second song you start breaking away from conformity and show individuality. This looks really effective when put with the other sections where you are all in unison minus the one person doing different movements. What choreographic devices did you use to show the breaking away from conformity?
ReplyDeleteThank you! We used unison firstly, to emphasise the contrast for when we break away- and then at the end, we used canon to break away from the group to show that we are embracing our individuality.
