Music and Deciding Structure

week 7

Over the half term break we communicated regularly to decide on what music we want to use. We firstly brainstormed ideas about what feeling we want to evoke from the audience, went away and all found different pieces. Eventually we found two that we want to use, initially we were worried about them not flowing and having an awkward, abrupt change in music however we came to realise that this actually worked really well with our idea of having an episodic structure- moreover, the two pieces complement each other quite well and fit the vibe we want to create.

In today’s session we started off by discussing the structure of our dance and piecing together the new parts we did last week with Megan and Daisy. This week we also set the sections to our piece of music which worked quite nicely. An unexpected challenge we had was that we had to count the music in 6’s when we had already choregraphed everything in 8’s so it was a small challenge to reset the counts for everything but it ended up working out really well. There are also small nuances in the music which we used to our advantage, the first one being during our entrance, there’s a part where a quick piano section starts and this is when we have a canon of heads looking backwards. This movement ties in well with our theme of influence and conforming to what everyone else is doing and it is further emphasised due to the change in music.

We also managed to choreograph and finalise our four sections that we spoke about in week 5; The entrance, the geometric shape, the walking clump and our Quartet/duet section.

Today we cleaned up the entrance section as we wanted it to be a bit different to how we originally planned- instead of doing it in canon, we realised it looked a bit messy and was not really effective in conveying our theme. We decided to use accumulation instead because the unison looked much tidier and clearer.

The walking clump section is a new idea that we worked on today and it was a bit difficult to choreograph; There are many counts that we have to remember because everyone is doing different parts at different times, however the end result looked really good and we definitely reached the desired effect with this section. The sharp turning of heads again conveys our theme of influence really well and it is repeated many times during this section.

  1. This is a great blog Caitlyn! Well done for overcoming the challenge of changing the counts from 8’s to 6’s! Is it challenging to have choreography with so many different things going on at once? If so, how could you overcome this challenge?

    1. Thank you! It is definitely one of the most challenging things because it has to look effective rather than messy however if we execute it well, I think it will have it's desired effect.

  2. I have enjoyed reading your reflections and the ways in which you overcame the challenges in your creative process. Can you elaborate on the mood that you had hoped to create with your chosen pieces of music?

    1. Thank you! For the first piece we wanted something that had a bit of a frantic vibe, almost creating the feeling of being behind and needing to catch up with everyone else as this fits in with our stimulus well. To contrast this feeling, our second piece was a lot more calmer and it compliments our idea of showing more individuality and freedom.

  3. This is a great blog post Caitlyn!
In your final piece what mood or feelings would you like to portray to the audience? And do you think your music choses will help to show them?

    1. Thank you! In our first song we want to catch the audience's attention immediately with the suspicious/ vigilant sounding music. In our second half of the piece we really want to create a thought provoking, reflective mood that encourages the audience to perhaps think about how individuality is present in their own lives. The second half of the piece is slower than the first which also emphasises the contrast between both.
