Starting Objectives & Final Evaluation

week 10

When we decided on our stimulus, our end goal was to create a piece that was thought-provoking and brought attention to the social influence of conformity- through this we want the audience to recognise the importance of their own individuality.

I feel as though we have met our starting objectives by exploring our stimulus and conducting extensive research. As we chose a theme with such strong scientific links, we had a large variety of subtopics to explore and this meant we didn’t have much difficulty generating ideas that were relevant to conformity. An example of this is how we drew inspiration from a social experiment- we were able to develop this concept into a creative portrayal of how easily people conform to society when under pressure.  We also drew inspiration from two practitioners and implemented aspects of their work into ours- examples of this would be how they evoke emotions from the audience and the use of gestural movements.

There were a few challenges we faced, our first was choreographing before we chose the music as we then had to adjust the choreography to be counted in sixes. This small issue was resolved very quickly, however, our biggest challenge was probably time management. As we had full schedules, not everyone was free at the same times so it was difficult to find time to be all together. To overcome this we started to choreograph in our households and then teach each other what we had come up with when we were able to meet- this saved a lot of time and also meant that everybody had contributed a lot to the choreography.

Overall our group worked really well together, we were very open-minded and encouraging towards everyone’s ideas and this is one of the main reasons why we were able to resolve problems efficiently.

Final Performance

Our final performance went really well, blocking it beforehand meant that we felt more comfortable in the large space. Furthermore, I feel like we really used our facial expressions and this definitely had a positive effect in our performance as it articulated all our emotions well.

Having a larger space encouraged us to dance bigger and our expansive movements also had a positive effect on our performance.

My experience across the module was an enjoyable one as we had to learn to utilise many different methods that will definitely be helpful when creating my own choreography in the future.

  1. Very good blog post Caitlyn! If you were to choreograph another 10 minuet piece what would you do differently? Would you use the same choreographic methods?

    1. Thank you! If I were to choreograph another piece, I would maybe choose a stimulus that was more abstract- maybe like an emotion or colour as I feel this challenge would be really interesting to work with. I would definitely use the same choreographic processes as they are very helpful in generating movement.

  2. This is a great blog! After watching your groups choreography, I found that your stimulus was consistently clear throughout the piece, well done! What techniques did you use to help portray your stimulus?

    1. Thank you! During the choreographic process we tried to link back to our stimulus often to ensure that we wouldn't stray away from our theme. Examples of this would be, when encountering tasks, we would use the same 6 words related to our stimulus that we came up with in the beginning. This allowed our theme to be consistent and prominent within our piece.

  3. I would say that you have done very well to draw together so many branches of your research, relating both to your chosen theme and to established creative practices, in order to create a piece that conveys your message clearly. Reflecting further on the process, is there anything that you would do differently if you were given the opportunity?

  4. Thank you! I feel that if I could, it would be really interesting to try and explore a different stimulus as I feel this has a really big impact on the overall piece.
